Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370661 AB OBJECTIVE: To induce, create & sustain community consciousness against AIDS by continuous counselling in the suburban general practice. METHODS: This is an effective attempt by a CBO catering maternity and Family Planning services to women who are steady partners of industrial labourers. The skilled and principled doctor-patient relationship are used to develop AIDS awareness. The centre also serves as a site for testing STD & HIV infections. 1000 people were evaluated at random across the community of 46000 population through interview based on a standard questionnaire. RESULTS: There is an improvement in the AIDS awareness among women (67% in 1994 as against 28% in '93) and insistance on condom use by their partners (32% of 14%). 91% brings disposable needles and 73% brings disposable gloves for internal examination (PV). Over 1000 husbands visisted the evening clinic for confidential counselling and testing in this year. CONCLUSION: To spread the message against AIDS in the prevention of HIV infection community can be reached through Family Planning clinics much effectively. Separate slot (evening clinic) full time social workers and assurance in privacy gain confidence to HIV/AIDS related counselling.
